Lebron is their leader, clearly, but he is not the reason

By: Thomas T. Jackson - Bleacher Report
San Francisco, CA - In early November, when the San Francisco 49ers stood at 4-4 after a tough loss to the division rival St. Louis Rams, head coach Jim Harbaugh was asked at a Monday press conference if he was satisfied with offensive coordinator Greg Roman's performance.  “As you watch the tape, you see where we all have fingerprints on this from an offensive perspective,” Harbaugh said, per ESPN.com's Paul Gutierrez. “It wasn’t just one guy. Wasn’t just one player, wasn’t just one coach. So that’s what I saw.” Unfortunately for the organization, Harbaugh couldn't have been more right: The 49ers' woes this season start at the very top and trickle down, from general manager Trent Baalke to Harbaugh to Roman and finally the personnel.  Owner Jed York took to Twitter to express his disappointment with the team's performance Thursday night.                                                              (More)

MIAMI, FL -  The first full month of the 2014-15 NBA season is in the books, which means two things. First, we've almost passed the juncture when every observation has to be qualified with a "but it's still early" caveat. Almost. Second, we've reached a logical checkpoint for singling out NBA award front-runners. We'll run down all of the leaders and contenders for each major end-of-season honor, focusing on the stats they've accumulated to this point and acknowledging the contexts in which those numbers                (more)

"Who goes? Who stays?"

SANTA ANA, CA — Two teams that just can't stay healthy, the Chicago Bulls and Oklahoma City Thunder, are off to slow starts in the early season. The Bulls are treading water due to their injuries, while the Thunder have sunk to the bottom of the Western Conference with Kevin Durant & Russell Westbrook  (more)

ATLANTA, GA - Three things are certainties in life: death, taxes and major NBAsurprises. Last year, a Phoenix Suns team widely projected for a sub-20-win season stunned the league by ripping off 48 victories and missing the playoffs by just a hair. The Indiana Pacers looked like the Eastern Conference's best team for much of the season, while the Los Angeles Clippers erupted for a franchise-best
57 wins under new head coach Doc Rivers. In the first month of the 2014-15 season, we've already seen similarly unexpected storylines unfolding. The Sacramento Kings and Milwaukee Bucks appear to be legitimate playoff contenders after winning 43 games combined last season, while the Western Conference seemingly touts seven or eight true championship threats. Which teams and players have most exceeded

"Can the Raptors survive this latest set back", Al Smith.

TORONTO, ON - He didn't make the catch of the season. He didn't even make the second-best catch of the season. Those grabs, so far, belong to rookie wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Sammy Watkins, respectively. He wasn't picked before Watkins, and based on the sentiment of some fans and analysts, he shouldn't have been picked seventh overall in the 2014 NFL draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers over his Texas A&M teammate Johnny Manziel. But Mike Evans is used to defying doubters and overcoming challenges. Evans' father was murdered in 2002.                            (More)

LOS ANGELES, CA — Just about every night, there's someone to admire from afar. Last Wednesday, Marc Gasol. Last Friday, Thaddeus Young. Up next on Tuesday, Greg Monroe. They are free-agent possibilities on a horizon still more than half a year away, but that's the closest the Los Angeles Lakers can get to seeing a fresh sunrise. On Sunday night, All-Star DeMar DeRozan sat out his first game with a torn groin tendon, and the Lakers were able to beat the Toronto Raptors, 129-122—seeing just how much one player, one way or the other, can create change. DeRozan figures to be in the free-agent market of 2016,     (more)

(or fallen short) of reasonable preseason expectations? Let's take a quick stroll through the league  as there are more surprises than most people at first glance might imagine. The Raptors perhaps are the surprise of the season as a team but most people really seemed to thought that this would be  season they would gel and come together as a unit, and they have - so far. The coaching staff have done a marvelous job with the team and ensuring      (more)
